Charisma Baquiran
Artist Statement
Art is something that has always gravitated towards my life. From music, writing, photography, dancing, ceramics, film, and drawing- there is something for all to participate in when it comes to expressing oneself.
An organizer, student, and childcare worker, art has been side-by-side when it comes to these roles. Constantly viewing life through an artistic lens, I want to continue to use art as a tool- when it comes to fighting for resistance and to positively influence those who are around me.

I find myself having an emotional connection to random objects- finding it hard to let go of trinkets of all sorts. From parking tickets, Trader Joes stickers, a medical bill, and clothing tags- these objects hold a story and memory that only I know and do not want to let go.

I wanted to show my both invisible and visible markers as an analog photographer.
The positive side of the photograph shows who I am on a daily basis. One of my favorite things is photographing the mountains that surround us.
The negative side has a window to a
cyanotype print that illustrates who I am as a person and the activities I partake in around the Valley.

I love Sylmar with all my being and wanted to pay an homage to my favorite places in SanFer. The ranchero essence of SanFer is one of the main inspirations in my art. The base of the map consists of cyanotype pieces that show San Fernando and the view of the mountains from one of my favorite look outs.
TiaChuchas and Midnight Hour, and S.O.W. (not featured) are all places that I have found community here in the valley. They are safe places that have allowed me to be vulnerable, be in community, and make beautiful friendships. The lace border is meant to portray the feeling of home— by mimicking a similar pillow that would be found in my home.

“I wanted to illustrate the essentials of my altar, a staple and constant in my life. How my altar in my home relates to the land and how I bring my altar and practice to the land, how there is no difference in practicing at home or in the land.
An homage to our ancestors who have been consistently resisting colonial order, and which brings me strength when we are still resisting to this day.
Growing up exploring these mountains have allowed me to find comfort and vulnerability in them, which I know brings many people comfort too. Having mountains on all sides of us is like being constantly hugged by them.
The brown to blue represents both how the land meets the sky or how the ocean kisses the sand, greeting each other and never leaving each other. Each flower used was cut to promote further growth for the plantita.”
